Kerrang is a rock magazine, the lexis is slang, which will gather a younger audience. They are individual and will push to have there voices heard, which fits rock music's political views about making voices heard, this is shown with the "fight the power", in addition the powerful expression of the main image. Block capitals with and exclamation mark seem loud and powerful. The younger, male cover aids the mainly male audience and younger ages.
Q is a mixed genre magazine, they follow the main, quality-filled, popular genres at the time, this fits the need to discover "Quality in all areas". The 29 year old viewers will be into newer and possibly some older artists, which is why they have Ed Sheeran and Liam Gallagher on the cover. The lexis is more casual, fitting with the age of the audience.
The lexis uses 'smarter' language which could appeal to the older audience and the classical theme. The female on the cover can appeal to the female viewers.. "give all children the power of music" - appeals to the younger viewers and possibly their parents if they wish to give their child a chance at creating music.

Free teen spirit album
Positioned around Dave Grohl's face

This is beneficial as the audience (Who are likely to be rock fans) will know who Dave Grohl is and will want to know more about him/Foo Fighters/Their music. Dave Grohl is also male, which links the the target audience being mainly male. Furthermore, the cover lines feature the name of predominantly older male artists, this includes the U&G aspect of personal identity and social interaction, as the male audience will find a fandom to interact with and feel included whilst discovering their personality. It also shows how the audience love and live for Quality music from all decades.
The free "Teen Spirit" album is an intertextual reference to Nirvana's song "Smells like Teen Spirit". This is a hook for the audience as they will know who Nirvana is and may be a fan of the song. The target audience are 30 - 50 year old, and will have lived at the same time as nirvana as well as existed when Dave Grohl joined. This aids to Dave Grohl being the star vehicle, as the audience would have remembered his role in the band. This includes the U&G aspect of social interaction as the audience will buy the magazine and converse with the friends about the artists in the magazine

Drama - "living dangerously", "society tried to extinguish me", "saving his soul", black & red colour palette suggests danger, anger, Lexis = musicians have a dangerous lifestyle/have been through dark times.
Binary opposition of good & evil.
Dark Knight: Intertextual reference, darkness, "arise" - Dark Knight Rises, Arise - Knighthood.
The Magazine Cover has religious / royal denotations, addressing Madonna as a "Pop Majesty" and saying "Immortalised by Art Kane". Madonna has a cross hanging from her nose ring, which links to Christianity and religion. Furthermore - the lexis of "Confessions", "majesty" and "immortalised" connotes power and religion. To subvert this, Madonna is licking the cross "sexually" which takes away from the religious semantic field. "The Madonna" is a religious term for The "Virgin Mary".
Madonna subverts the stereotype of females being Feminine, as she is represented as Masculine. Furthermore, rock magazines stereotypically have White Males as the Star Vehicle.
The representations reflect the dominance of celebrity culture in society.
The magazine has an aggressive lexis, using words such as "Kill", "killer", "heartache", "heroin"
Thursday 3rd March 2022
Exam Prep
L/O: to explore the possible exam tasks for music magazines
Mojo magazine uses subverted stereotypes of females to represent Madonna. She is shown to be wearing a shirt and tie, which are stereotypically masculine clothing, connoting that she is confident and in a position of masculine power.. This subverts the stereotype of females wearing dresses and feminine clothing. However, Mojo magazine reinforces the stereotype of females being all about beauty and wearing make-up, as we can see Madonna is wearing eyeliner, lipstick and (presumably) false eyelashes. Her hair seems professionally cared for and her eyebrows seem to have been shaped, showing that she is presented in a feminine way.
Furthermore, we can see a cross hanging from Madonna's nose ring. Religion is stereotyped to be an innocent, loving thing, but Madonna subverts this by
10 minutes
licking the cross in a "sexual" way, connoting it to be more devious. It presents rebellious, punk ideas
Some of the differences in magazine extracts 1 and 2 are due to the genres, however some differences are because of the difference in target audience.
Mojo Magazine predominantly uses the rock genre, which is commonly described as extreme, violent and passionate. The lexis Mojo uses reinforces this; words such as "Kill", "Killer", "Music Junkie" and "Haunted" are seen. Furthermore, they use the colour palette of back, red and blue - which are stereotyped as predominantly masculine colours - to represent the rock genre. The magazine is presented as a masculine one.
In contrast, the classical BBC Music magazine has a less vibrant colour palette and is presented as feminine. the word "music" is in a serif font, which connotes femininity.

Thursday 31st March 2022
Mise-En-Scene
L/O: to examine the use of media language in music videos
In Sk8r Boi the clothes they are wearing connotes teenage, punk rebellion. The studded/spiked bracelets are general "punk" genre stereotypes. She has a skater style that isn't feminine. The Desaturated colours leave a darker theme to the song - genre conventions of pop/rock. The abandoned building & urban city street connote rebellion and skate culture. The Old car, skateboards, spray pain and electric guitar connote rebellion through graffitiing walls, as well as perpetuate skater stereotypes/culture.
These all have a relationship to teenage rebellion and Punk stereotypes, as well as perpetuating the "skater" culture and stereotypes that follow it.
They reflect the punk genre through the "rebellious" clothing of studded bracelets and non-feminine clothing, as well as the clothes being baggy and stereotypically "teenage". This is further reinforced through the stereotype of teenagers being rebellious and following disestablishment.
Avril Lavigne and her friends are dressed like teenage punks. This is achieved through using desaturated colours and stereotypical punk clothing. This connotes to the audience that they are rebellious teenagers.
Sk8r Boi is filmed in a city. We can see this as we are shown shots of skyscrapers and Graffiti on them. The video is set here as teenagers will stereotypically be rebellious by graffitiing the walls of a City
They chose the actors from American Pie in order to promote the film (released in 1999). as the song was released in 2000. The film was extremely popular at the time, and the band would have used them as it could bring more popularity to the music video.
Main Characters costume connotes his characteristics of being a "nerd" - large hat, large jacket, t-shirt, beige colour.
Connotes that he is "geeky", an American stereotype of the types of kids (nerds, jocks, populars, emos, punks etc.)
He is wearing this to match the mood of a school setting, with the "nerdy" character being bullied by the "Jock" character.
In Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus and Sk8r Boi - Avril Lavigne, both music videos use mise-en-scene: costume in order to achieve the affect of teenage stereotypes.
For Example, Teenage Dirtbag uses the Star Characters clothing to connote that he is a "nerd", reinforcing American stereotypes about the types of kids in a school setting (nerds, jocks, popular kids, punks etc.). In contrast, Sk8r Boi uses costume to perpetuate the stereotype of Punks rioting in a city. This reinforces the stereotypes of Teenagers being reckless and wild, as well as being rebellious to the hierarchy. In Teenage Dirtbag, He wears a large hat, coat and a t-shirt, as well as most of his clothing being beige - connoting that he is a "boring nerd". In Sk8r Boi - Avril Lavigne is wearing cuffs, baggy clothing and dark eyeshadow/make-up - stereotypical clothing of a "punk".

L/O: to explore how sound & editing are used to create meaning in music videos.
Sound is DIEGETIC or NON-DIEGETIC
Diegetic can be heard by the audience and the characters, it is from inside the world of the text.
Non-diegetic sounds can only be heard by the audience, it is from outside the world of the text.
Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag:
band playing at the beginning
Car driving in
Bike Crashing when hit by car
Power dynamic between Jock & the Nerd
Girl singing is meant to appear diegetic.
Band performing at the prom becomes diegetic
Sk8r Boi - Avril Lavigne:

Mise-en-Scene
- Sk8r boi has more cuts and is more fast paced

- Clothing - nerdy school clothing vs baggy punk clothing
Thursday 12th May 2022
Explain one way in which music videos use media language to differ from each other. Refer to one example of contrasting media language in two music videos you have studied to support your answer.
- Mise-en-scene = Clothing is different, portraying a punk skater wearing baggy clothes, studded wrist bands etc.- trying to stand out from everyone else, or a nerd wearing overly large clothes, large hat etc. or a Jock wearing sports uniform and being overpowering.- trying to conform into a group.
- Sounds = More diegetic sounds in SB than TD
- Editing = fast pace cuts in SB - fits the tone, rock genre, less cuts in TD
- Camerawork= Camera movement is handheld and realistic in Sk8r Boi, whereas the camera is static and less realistic in Teenage Dirtbag.
In Sk8r Boi and Teenage Dirtbag, they use Mise-en-Scene differently in order to differ from each other. In SB, Avril Lavigne is wearing Baggy clothes, studded wrist bands and dark make-up. This is used to give the effect of a rebellious, punk, skating teenager who wants to stand out from the crowd and rebel against the standards set by society. However in TD, the main character is wearing overly large clothes, a large hat, and a t-shirt, connoting that he is a nerd, whilst the 'jock' characters are wearing a school sports jacket. This gives the effect of a school setting, with people trying to conform into a certain group (nerds, jocks, populars etc.). These both fit with the Genre of the song and the artists image.
Representation:

Stereotypes
Counter-types
Gender - Masculine/Feminine/Neither
Power- Dominance, Weakness
Objectification
Underrepresentation.
Gender Stereotypes:
Thursday 19th May 2022
DO NOW:
1) Advertising, Music videos(uptown Funk),
2) The sexual objectification of women is more likely to appear in media
3) This is likely because the majority of large Media Conglomerates are owned by men, and as we live in a patriarchal society, that is the content that is projected.
4) Narrative,
Sk8r Boi:
- urban setting, diegetic sound, city environment
- young, urban rebellious vibe
- Sporty, exciting, rebellious, different - dropping from ropes
- messy teenage bedroom, uses old technology - reflects 2000's time period

- disobeys school rules (BMX in halls, uniform)

- wild in the middle of the street
- Avril is successful - surrounded by fans
- ignoring warning signs, anti-establishment attitude
- close up of band members - punk, focusing on musical talent/skill
- close up of Avril - Selling the artist to the audience
- Aggressive facial expressions - rulebreaker, dominant, aggresssive
- hand symbol fo rock/metal/punk genres
- police - lawbreaker, Danger
- people knocked to the floor, people trampled, girl arrested, destroying guitar & car
- police car/helicopter
- light surrounding Avril Lavigne - God-like
- presented in an alternative community rather than mainstream popular crowds
- heteronormative representation of sexuality
- mainly white cast - less diverse - strange in comparison to a city background as a city will have more ethnically diverse people.
Teenage Dirtbag:
- based on the films "Loser" and "American Pie"

- band are shown to be popular/successful
- Jason Biggs walking downstairs against the crowd - stands out from the crowd, alienated, alternative
- Band plays instrument - audience enjoys guitars/drums being played - demonstrates talent of band
- victim of bullying - "L" symbol - portrayed as an "underdog/loser"
- popular jocks surrounded by girls

L/O: to explain the construction of representation in music videos
Sk8r Boi challenges Van Zoonen's theory of patriarchy.
- Baggy/casual clothes
- no sexualisation of males/females
- rebellious, strong, independent, confident females rather than soft, innocent, nurturing, motherly females - skate culture, mise-en-scene,
other representation supports it:
- male police officers
- pretty girl in convertible
- other males are strong/masculine - reinforces stereotypes
Teenage Dirtbag supports Van Zoonen's theory of patriarchy
- Mena Suvari portrayed as "beautiful" for the male gaze
- Mena Suvari is soft, nurturing and innocent, following stereotypes - turns away the Jocks/bullies, kind to JB
- Jason Biggs is a male who is obsessively in love with MS
- MS is objectified as the "prize" for the males
- jocks are stereotypically masculine
- Jason challenges the theory through being portrayed as 'weak' and 'non-masculine'
patriarchal society
easy to recognise
narrative
Stereotypes are used in music videos in order to challenge/support stereotypical ideas. They are used as they are easy to recognise, used for narrative, and/or are reinforced as the normal in a patriarchal society
Gender Stereotypes are used in Sk8r Boi through the male side characters that are performing with Avril Lavigne. They reinforce male stereotypes through being physically strong and powerful. This connotes that males are supposed to be strong and are naturally more muscular. These stereotypes are used to fit the narrative - strong, rebellious teenagers fighting against a government and going against societal norms. However, it may also be used because of a patriarchal society that is run by men, and these stereotypes are pushed as what is believed to be the "normal" of societal images. This supports Van Zoonen's theory of patriarchy, believing that Men and Women are presented stereotypically.
However, Gender Stereotypes are also challenged by Avril Lavigne. She is presented in a masculine way, subverting Gender stereotypes. She is presented as rebellious, strong and (almost) aggressive. This is used to challenge the older stereotypes of women being caring, nurturing, kind and motherly. This challenges Van Zoonen's theory of patriarchy
In Teenage Dirtbag, Gender Stereotypes are reinforced through Mena Suvari's character. She is presented as kind, caring and nurturing. She turns away from, the bullies when they bully the main character, showing her kindness. This supports Van Zoonen's theory of patriarchy
