Radio industry and audiences

L/O: to explore the industry and audience behind the Live Lounge

Public Service Broadcasting refers to broadcasting for public benefit rather than commercial interests (making money). OFCOM is the communications regulator, and requires that certain television and radio broadcasters fulfil certain requirements as a part of their license to broadcast. BBC = public service remit. Large audience range

1) 10
2) 40
3) funded by a license fee paid by UK households
4) Commercial Radio.
5)
6) live radio, Radio 1 app, online videos

Radio 1 audience is ranged 15-29 - presenters, informal language, music + topics
Radio 2 audience is 35+ - music + presenters
Radio 4 audience is 54 - formal language, clear diction, serious

  • colour palette: bright, vibrant colours contrasted on a white background, darker colours at night - brighter colours during the day
  • younger presenters

Political Context - notes:

Politicians believe that Radio 1 shouldn't be covered by the license fee as political decision makers don't see mainstream popular music as important/educational.

Convergence: Media convergence is a term to refer to the merging of previously distinct media technologies and media forms due to digitalisation and computer networking. (i.e Radio 1, Radio 1 app)

Plurality: ensures a diversity of viewpoints available and consumed across and within media enterprises. Preventing any one media presenter to influence over public opinion and the political agenda (no propaganda).

The BBC presents warnings when inappropriate language is used.

Live Lounge Appeal and format

L/O: to explore the format of the show and its appeals.

The benefits of broadcasting two stations in the lounge is the increased audience appeal, more revenue and playing live music. Furthermore, Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra can follow the Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) requirements through performing live music on the live lounge.  This enables a larger audience to listen & tune in.

BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge

L/O: to understand exam style questions and practice exam questions

Appeal to audience:
  • Cover of beyonce - wider audience appeal\
  • Interview- insight into personal info
  • younger presenter at the same age as the audience (15-29)
BBC Remit:
  • Popular music
  • Age of artists - young
  • Vocalists - emerging new to the scene -- first live lounge for on of the backing vocalists
  • Live performance

The Live Lounge appeals to the audience through the Uses & Gratifications Theory using Personal Identity. As we can see, the presenters of the lounge are of a similar age (20's) to the Target Audience (15-29), which makes it easier for the audience to relate to the presenters. Furthermore, Stormzy's cover of Beyonce's song appeals to a wider audience, as she is an older artist and her music will be more appealing to an older audience. In addition, the Live Lounge gives us insight into Stormzy's personal info, giving us information we normally wouldn't learn. The live Lounge appeals to the BBC remit through It provides a platform for live music through all the artists performing Live, popular music. The artists are in the age range of the target audience and offer a range of new music with a mixture of mainstream & new artists. Stormzy is mainstream, however not as his commercial Genre (grime) as he performs a cover of Beyonce. There is a mix of music and speech, changing between interviews and live performances of the artists own music and a cover of a song.

The Exam:

The music section of Paper 2 has 5 questions
Questions 1, 2 and 3 could be on Radio.

Question 1:

Knowledge question
1 Mark Question

i.e:
Who regulates radio in the UK? OFCOM
Who owns radio 1? the BBC
What is Public Service Broadcasting? Broadcasting that benefits the Public
What is the term meaning the merging of previously separate media forms in one entity? Convergence

Question 2:

A knowledge & understanding question
4 marks
back up your answers with evidence from the case study.

i.e:
Explain one advantage for audiences of each of the following:
  • listening to live radio
  • accessing radio content online
Live radio:

it's live - audience can feel like they are right there in the moment,
engage in live competitions,
can listen to if for free anywhere

Online radio:

physically move if on an app
can skip parts you don't like - increase audience choice
can listen to it later if you miss it

An advantage of listening to Live Radio is the fact that it is Live. The audience can feel as if they are actually there in the moment rather than just listening to music from an electronic device. In addition, the audience can engage in live competitions, allowing them to feel included in the show as well as enjoy the excitement of the tension in the show.

Question 3:

10 marks

i.e:
Explain how and why producers of radio programmes target different audiences. Refer to the Radio 1 live lounge to support your answers

Producers use various methods to target audiences. The Radio 1 Live Lounge targets an audience of 15-29 year olds in order to fit the BBC's Public Service Broadcasting Remit. This remit states that they must provide Entertaining and Educating content for a young audience, as well as supporting new and emerging artists. This is achieved through having young presenters that are within the age range of the Target Audience (presenters in their 20's) as well as artists that are in that age range (Stormzy = 28, Holly Humberstone = 22), in addition to the artists & presenters speaking using informal language, such as Stormzy saying "Big Up" and "sick". They support new, emerging artists such as Holly Humberstone and the Back-up vocalists for Stormzy's performances

DIRT
L/O: to review and reflect on the mock exam and set personal targets

BBFC - film
OFCOM - radio
ASA - advertising
IPSO & IMPRESS - Magazine & newspaper
VIDEO STANDARDS COUNCIL - video games

Media Language:
Camerawork
editing
mise-en-scene
narrative style

editing:
  • faster paced cuts in sk8r boi
  • makes Avril Lavigne seem more energetic, rebellious. Being an extremely rebellious, excited teenage starting a riot/rebellion.
  • slower paced cuts in Teenage Dirtbag
  • makes the music video seem like an everyday life, nothing exciting just what the Main Character experiences on a day to day basis. seems like a boring, slow school day rather than a fast paced, exciting, rebellious teenage riot
Q3:
made to make money - commercial
presenters speak in slang to fit to entertain audience
PSB - makes radio 1 have a public service remit
live music
Q4:
white male musician fits rock musician stereotypes.
Q5:
Intro: I believe that there are more differences than similarities due to the opposing stereotypes of pop and rock music videos, and it is taken extremely far.

Q7:
expand marketing
strengthen brand image
profit
diversified media conglomerate, less dependant on one media form for revenue and protected from fluctuations in one part of the media market
Q8:
the characters. audience may relate to fitting in with the crowd, or standing out and fighting back. may relate to heroes/values.

Q9:
the use of vibrant primary colours in the poster campaign grabs the attention of a younger audience as they wont understand the actual characters but will notice the brighter colours, connoting something good. Furthermore they may play with lego characters, and will recognise the shape and types of lego characters, compelling them to watch the movie. The use of explosions, serious heroic characters and a humorous, terrified character running away hooks the attention of a teenage audience. The teenagers may not be entertained by the fact that it is lego, however the promise of violence and fighting is connoted by the explosions and serious look on characters like Batman and Wyldstyle. Furthermore the teenagers will know characters like batman and will want to watch the movie with the promise of seeing character like him.
